President Bush stands up for the U.S.A in a French television interview

TF1, a French television station, held an interview with President George W. Bush this afternoon, and asked some difficult and criticizing questions. The interviewer mentioned that the French feel that America is deteriorating their relationship with them, and ‘punishing’ them for holding different opinions on Iraq. Bush acknowledges that not so many people like him, but he stands up for his country. He tries to help alleviate some of America’s negative rep. He acknowledges that Iraq did not have WMD’s, and says that he hopes to work with Iran peacefully on resolutions for their nuclear project. He implies that even though people might not like him, it doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t like America.
Some quotes by The President:
“Look, first of all, I think most people respect America and they like Americans. They may not necessarily like the President.”
“That’s absurd to say the American Dream is repression. Freedom is the absolute we’re helping people achieve. That’s — think about what’s happening with 25 million people in Iraq, or 25 million people in Afghanistan, or the fact that the United States is freeing people from the scourge of HIV/AIDS…And if you come to the United States, you’ll find that you can practice your religion any way you see fit, that this is an open society and a free society.”
“The image may not be as good as one would like, but people respect what America stands for. They may not like the decisions I have made, but I don’t see how you can be a leader if you worry about public opinion polls all the time, particularly in a world in which there’s a lot of problems that require strong leadership.”
“We’re friends with China, Japan and South Korea –something that’s been hard for other Presidents to do.”
“You’re really not going to know the history of the Bush administration until long after you and I are dead. There’s no such thing as accurate short-term history. It takes a while for people to see the results of decisions having been made.”
“I love my country, and I love what we stand for.”
“I’m a — I’ve got a piece of property I love in Texas –”
